《Whiteness and Darkness, the Place Between》 is a two-person exhibition by artists Kang Youjeong and Yoon Ido, who have visually and formally explored the tension between emotion and imagination through the perceptual and emotional duality of “white” and “black.”
Through the mediums of painting and drawing, they respectively convey different modes of resonance, depicting ‘that place’—a silent terrain where preexisting senses and landscapes are interwoven.
Kang Youjeong, in her recent work, visualizes the structure of emotions and the rhythm of nature using increasingly lighter hues and a drawing-like texture. Moving away from the darkness of past emotions, she follows the grain of ‘white’, within which the depth of feeling is recorded through color, texture, speed, and density.
Yun Yi-doe, on the other hand, constructs memory and traces of place through the sensations of ‘black’ night, atop the layered boundaries where urban reality and imagination overlap. Her lines and texts structure fragmented scenes left in the dark into poetic and reflective visual fields.
The two artists move beyond the fixed dichotomy of ‘whiteness’ and ‘darkness’, constructing a space with temporal-gap where emotion and imagination intersect. Through painterly language, they unfold ‘the place between’ where perception and meaning are deferred. This exhibition presents a visual exploration of that very gap—‘that place’—a contemplative inquiry into the subtle intensities of sensation that contemporary painting can still reach today."감정은 ‘흰’의 결을 따라 밝아지고, 상상은 ‘검은’ 밤 속에 머문다. 흐르고, 응시하는 두 시선은 교차하는 조용한 풍경 속, 발화 이전의 감각이 잠복하는 ‘그 곳’에서 마주한다."

《흰 그리고 검은, 그 곳》은 ‘흰’과 ‘검은’이라는 시각적·정서적 감각을 매개로 감정과 상상의 밀도를 조형적으로 탐색해온 두 작가, 강유정과 윤이도의 2인전이다. 이들은 회화와 드로잉을 수행적 언어로 삼아, 서로 다른 방식의 응시를 통해 발화 이전의 풍경, 감각이 잠복하는 ‘그 곳’을 조용히 그려낸다.
강유정은 최근 밝아진 색채와 드로잉적 붓질을 통해 감정의 구조와 자연의 리듬을 함께 시각화한다. 과거의 어두운 감정에서 벗어나, ‘흰’의 결을 따라 흐르고, 그 안에는 감정의 진폭이 색과 결, 속도와 밀도로 녹아든다.
윤이도는 도시의 실재와 상상이 겹쳐지는 지층 위에서 ‘검은’ 밤의 감각을 통해 장소의 기억과 사유를 구성한다. 선과 문장은 어둠 속에 남겨진 사소한 장면들을 서정적으로 되짚으며, 텍스트와 이미지, 허구와 현실 사이를 오가며 상상의 장소를 구축한다.
두 작가는 ‘흰’과 ‘검은’이라는 고정된 대비를 넘어서, 정서와 상상이 교차하는 시차적 공간을 구성하며, 감각과 의미가 유예되는 ‘사이의 장소’를 회화적 언어로 펼쳐낸다. 전시는 그 틈, ‘그 곳’에서 펼쳐지는 시각적 사유이자 오늘날 회화가 도달할 수 있는 내밀한 감각의 진폭에 대한 비평적 탐색이다.

*‘그 곳’을 띄어 쓴 것은, 단순한 장소가 아닌 감정과 사유가 머무는 은유적 공간으로서의 의미를 강조하기 위함이다.
