2024 

Small Piece
In one of a museum in India, I saw a small sculpture the size of a palm. The tiny piece, which could easily be overlooked if not examined closely, was a 3rd-century Gandhara-style figure carved from gray schist. It depicted an elderly figure, but it had become a torso with much of the details eroded, making it hard to recognize. On its back, there was a flat piece attached, giving it the appearance of a fallen angel with broken wings. The sculpture was labeled "Atlas."
What looked like wings might have been the sky instead. According to its purpose in mythology, the sculpture was likely used as a base for a column or a pillar. Despite its role of holding up the sky, this small fragment was a mere remnant of its original grandeur. A beautiful stone piece whose meaning and function had faded away. The Greek mythological figure, described centuries ago, had traveled to India as a broken small fragment. Encountering it in a foreign city felt like transcending time and space. It was a sculpture reborn, stirring within my heart.작은 조각
인도의 한 박물관에서 손바닥만 한 크기의 작은 조각을 보았다. 자세히 보지 않으면 지나칠 만큼 작은 조각은 회색 편암을 깎아 만든 3 세기 간다라 양식의 인물상이었다. 노인의 형상을 했으나 군데군데 떨어져 나가 도상을 알아보기 어려운 토르소가 되어있었다. 등에는 납작한 조각이 붙어있어 마치 날개가 부러진 천사처럼 보이기도 했다. 조각의 이름은 ‘아틀라스’라고 쓰여 있었다. 날개처럼 보였던 그것은 어쩌면 창공이었나보다. 신화 속 역할처럼 조각은 기둥이나 석주의 받침 조각으로 쓰였단다. 하늘을 떠받드는 과업을 수행하게 된 그의 조각은 한없이 작았다. 의미도 기능도 사라진 아름다운 돌 조각. 수 세기 전 누군가가 묘사한 그리스 신화의 인물은 부서진 작은 조각이 되어 인도에 이르렀다. 낯선 도시에서의 마주침은 마치 시간과 공간을 초월하는 것 같았다. 그것은 마음속에서 요동치며 새로이 태어나는 조각이었다.
I stayed in Mumbai, India, for about 40 days in 2023. I was captivated by its unique landscape. Mumbai exudes a warm and gentle impression with its people, old buildings, and tropical plants intertwined. It feels like a landscape drawn with a pencil on paper resembling the color of sand. The scenery of Mumbai evokes thoughts of repetitive patterns and rhythms found in space and nature, reminiscent of chiaroscuro, a linear element. Currently, in 2024, I am staying in Mumbai, observing and painting the landscape. It is a collection of artistic motifs aimed at discovering unique forms and new aesthetics in everyday and unfamiliar landscapes. This exploration involves observing and depicting landscapes, as well as investigating the act of expressing them in a fundamentally basic and classical manner through monochromatic linear sketches.2023년 인도 뭄바이에 40여일 간 머무르게 되었다. 뭄바이는 수많은 사람과 열기, 오래된 건물과 열대 식물이 뒤섞여 미지근하고도 부드러운 인상을 풍겼다. 마치 모래의 색을 닮은 미색 종이에 연필로 그린 것과 같은 풍경이었다. 풍경은 공간과 자연에서 발견되는 반복적인 패턴과 리듬감, 소묘를 떠올리게 하는 선線적인 요소를 생각하게 했다. 2024년 현재, 뭄바이에서 지내며 풍경을 바라보고 그리고 있다. 일상의 사생이자 낯선 풍경에서 고유한 조형성과 새로운 미감을 발견하는 회화적 모티프의 수집이다. 이는 풍경을 바라보고 그리는 행위, 그리고 그것을 무채색의 선묘라는 다분히 기본적이며 고전적인 방식으로 표현하는 행위에 대한 탐구가 될 것이다.
