We are quite accustomed to things that “look like ~.” The screens in our hands are flooded with all sorts of captivating images, and sometimes these images may not even try to deceive us meticulously. We have likely experienced the dissonance between the expectations set by an image and its actual nature. However, instead of feeling betrayed by being deceived, we can embrace the playful sensations that the image offers. Does it really matter whether that shining light in the sky is an artificial satellite or a star? The stars depicted in ancient constellations are not mere drawings on a flat surface; they are separated from us by distances of dozens of light-years. Kang Youjeong creates patterns of various round, glowing shapes on paper tinged with bright colors, using only black to create contrasts. Her calmly glowing screens seem to speak about the ways we can accept images as surfaces and the possibilities for artistically appropriating them.
우리는 ‘~처럼 보이’는 것들에 제법 익숙해졌다. 손 안의 화면 속에서는 온갖 매혹하는 이미지들이 범람하고, 때로 그 이미지들은 치밀하게 속이려 들지도 않는다. 이미지의 겉모습에서 갖게 된 기대가 벗어나는 경험도 여러 번 겪어 보았을 것이다. 그러나 그때 속았다는 배신감보다는 그 이미지가 지닌 유희적 감각을 전유할 수 있다. 저 하늘에 보이는 빛나는 게 인공위성이든 별이든 무슨 상관이란 말인가? 고대인들이 그린 별자리 속 별들도 사실은 그림 같은 평면이 아니라 지구와의 거리가 수십 광년씩 차이가 난다. 강유정은 밝은 색으로 물들인 종이 위에 검은 색으로만 대비를 만들어 온갖 동그랗게 빛나는 것들, 그 무늬들을 새긴다. 담담하게 빛나는 화면들은 이미지를 표면으로써 받아들이는 방법과 이를 예술적으로 전유할 수 있는 가능성을 말하는 듯했다.
