It shatters and scatters. Scattered debris corrodes the surroundings, ultimately crumbling and collapsing everything around."“빛을 띤 채 반짝이며 아름답다. 솟아올랐다가 고꾸라지며 부풀었다 터지기를 반복한다. 부서지고 흩어진다. 흩뿌려진 잔해는 주위를 잠식하며 급기야 무너뜨리고 만다.”

The exhibition “Fire & Waves” unfolds the similarities and differences found in the forms of burning flames and surging waves. Due to the pandemic situation, I spent more time in the studio than usual, gazing at my works much longer. Gradually, I found myself immersed in the images of fire and water, which repeatedly appeared in the landscapes on my works. Interestingly, flames/smoke and  waves/foam, bore striking resemblances to each other, not only in appearance but also in their attributes. They both soared upwards only to fall down again, creating waves and spreading debris.
However, while fire is finite, disappearing after a brief blaze, waves are endless, constantly surging forth. Unlike waves, flames ignite, leave behind ashes, and vanish. This finiteness, like the new life emerging from the ashes after a wildfire, often marks a dramatic moment of change. On the other hand, waves have been relentlessly crashing from beyond the sea for centuries. Though some may appear to break and disappear upon reaching the shore, some return to the sea or transform into clouds and rain. Ultimately, they return as waves, reaching infinity once again.
Therefore, fire and waves represent both the beginning of change and repetition. They evoke both beauty and danger, carrying both anxiety and hope due to their ability to bring about unpredictable, chain reactions of change. Thus, despite the anxiety, one may find symbols of small hope by lighting a firecracker or watching the waves at the beach, trying to gauge what lies beyond the horizon.<불꽃과 파도>는 타오르는 불꽃과 솟구치는 파도의 형상에서 발견한 닮음과 다름을 풀어놓은 전시이다. 팬데믹이라는 시대 상황으로 인해 평소보다 스튜디오에 더 긴 시간 머물며 작품을 오래도록 바라보았다. 그리고 자연스레 화면 속 풍경에 반복하여 등장하는 불과 물의 이미지에 침잠하게 되었다. 불꽃과 연기, 파도와 물거품은 의외로 서로 닮은 형상을 띄고 있었다. 이들은 모습만 닮은 것이 아니라 속성까지도 닮은 듯했다. 위로 솟아오르지만 이내 떨어지기를 반복하고, 파동을 만들어내며 잔해를 퍼트린다. 
그러나 불꽃은 잠깐 타오르고 사라지므로 유한하지만, 파도는 끊임없이 밀려오며 무한하다. 불꽃은 파도와 달리 타오르고 재를 남기고 사라진다. 이러한 유한함은 마치 들불이 지나간 자리에서 새 생명이 죽음을 딛고 태어나듯 극적인 변화의 계기가 되기도 한다. 반면에 파도는 아주 오래전부터 바다 너머로부터 멈추지 않고 밀려오기를 반복한다. 파도는 해안에 이르러 부서져 사라진 것처럼 보이지만, 일부는 다시 바다로 돌아가거나 구름이 되고 비가 되기도 한다. 끝에는 다시 파도가 되어 돌아옴으로써 무한함에 이른다.
그러므로 불꽃과 파도는 각각 변화의 시작이며 반복이다. 완전하게 예측할 수 없는 연쇄적인 변화를 불러일으킨다는 점에서 불꽃과 파도는 아름다우면서도 위험하며, 불안과 희망을 동시에 품고 있다. 그래서 불안함에도 작은 희망의 형상을 찾고자 초에 불을 붙이고 폭죽을 쏘아 올리고, 바다를 찾아 파도 소리를 들으며 수평선 너머를 가늠하는 것일 테다.
